Bharata Mata College is a first grade arts and science co-educational institution in the aided sector owned and managed by the Archdiocese of Ernakulam Angamaly. Established in July 1965 by the late Cardinal Joseph Parecattil and situated at Thrikkakara facing the new Seaport-Airport road, it is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. It stands in the vicinity of such landmarks like the CUSAT, the NPOL, the Model Engineering College and the Ernakulam civil station. The College serves the higher education needs of a socially, economically and educationally backward area comprising the revenue district of Ernakulam. The College runs 13degree courses and P.G. courses. In addition, it is an approved Off Campus Centre under M.G. University.
The College has nearly 1300 students on its roll of whom 60% are girls. There are 80 members in the teaching faculty and 60 members in the administrative faculty.
The college has a vast campus of 20.5 acres with all the required basic infrastructure and is well connected with important neighboring landmarks like the cochin university the NPOL, the model Engineering college and the Ernakulam district collectorate. Though it has a semi-urban location, Bharata Mata largely caters to the higher education aspirations of a socially, educationally and economically marginalized sections of a rural population consisting mostly of women. The college has 13 undergraduate courses and 5 post-graduate programmes. Nearly 100 members of the teaching faculty and 38 members of the ministerial staff take care of the educational needs of around 1600 students. Five well equipped convent hostels look after the residential needs of girls. The college canteen which provides refreshments at subsidized rates is a boon to the college community in general and the non-resident student community in particular. In keeping with the lofty vision of the founder, Bharata Mata welcomes students from all communities and creeds. The NAAC peer team visit and subsequent grant of accreditation have opened up fresh areas of responsibility to achieve continuous academic improvement.
