Explore, Experiment & Excel- Unlock the Future with Physics
The Department of Physics was established in 1965 with the commencement of science groups in the Pre-Degree course. The B. Sc. Physics Model I was introduced in 1980, followed by B. Sc. Physics Model II (with Computer Applications as a Vocational Subject) in 2001. The department was elevated to a PG Department in 2021 with the introduction of the new-generation aided postgraduate program, M.Sc. Space Science. In 2022, it attained the prestigious status of a Research Department, marking a significant milestone in its academic and research endeavours. With the college attaining autonomous status in 2024, the department expanded its academic offerings with the launch of the FYUGP (Four-Year Undergraduate Program) B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics and B. Sc. (Hons) with Computer Science. These programs provide two specialized streams: one specializes in Astrophysics/Materials Science/Medical Physics/Digital Electronics, and another specializes in Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing.
The department is dedicated to deliver high-quality education by integrating theoretical knowledge with hands-on laboratory training, ensuring students develop a strong foundation in physics. It also fosters a dynamic research environment, encouraging advancements in both theoretical and experimental physics. Beyond academics and research, the department is committed to nurturing scientific temper, ethical values, and a sense of social responsibility, shaping well-rounded individuals equipped for future challenges in science and technology.
